I am a fan of the Lucas Davenport and have kept up with both Prey and Virgil Flowers series。 The first Lettie book was dry， heavy on details and light on the development of Lettie's character。 Dark Angel moves in the right direction for me。 Lettie's character is more relatable。 I hope this is a work in progress and that Lettie will continue to be flushed out， more likable and human。In Dark Angel， Lettie is teamed up with Rod Baxter and Barb Cartwright to infiltrate Ordinary People， an extremist I am a fan of the Lucas Davenport and have kept up with both Prey and Virgil Flowers series。 The first Lettie book was dry， heavy on details and light on the development of Lettie's character。 Dark Angel moves in the right direction for me。 Lettie's character is more relatable。 I hope this is a work in progress and that Lettie will continue to be flushed out， more likable and human。In Dark Angel， Lettie is teamed up with Rod Baxter and Barb Cartwright to infiltrate Ordinary People， an extremist group。 This leads to the discovery of a much more dangerous and timely enemy that puts Lettie and her team in serious danger。 I enjoyed the fast and furious ending and appreciate the strong female characters that Sandford has created。 Thanks to Netgalley for the digital copy of this book 。 。。。more

I love the character of Letty an almost psychopath who is on our side。 Written in Sanfords signature rapid fire manner。 It created a thriller out of true events， it really makes you wonder how much of this could really happen。 Only downside was one of the characters was described as fat and it was mentioned at least a dozen times。 And Letty was fat shaming him。 It just felt unnecessary to the story。Otherwise another quick Sanford book。I was given a copy by Netgalley。opinions are mine。

3。5⭐️ rounded down I’ve been a long time reader of this author and while I prefer his Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers books， the Letty Davenport books are a fun escapist series to read。 I liked Letty a lot more in this book！ She still doesn’t have the charisma that her father does， but it’s nice to have a strong， smart and capable young woman as a MC in a thriller。 This was another action packed fast paced story。 It’s a timely plot with aspects pulled from current global political situations 3。5⭐️ rounded down I’ve been a long time reader of this author and while I prefer his Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers books， the Letty Davenport books are a fun escapist series to read。 I liked Letty a lot more in this book！ She still doesn’t have the charisma that her father does， but it’s nice to have a strong， smart and capable young woman as a MC in a thriller。 This was another action packed fast paced story。 It’s a timely plot with aspects pulled from current global political situations and kept my interest the whole time。 I was happy to see more female characters in this and hope the ladies， especially Barbara， make future appearances。I also really liked her computer nerd partner Baxter， but didn’t appreciate the way his weight was discussed throughout the book。 Letty constantly makes snide comments when he eats or says he is hungry and even lectured him several times about being out of shape and overweight。 He is called “that fat guy” by almost every character at least once。 It was a very strange and distracting aspect and I have no idea why this was a focus when it had zero impact on the story。 There were also too many descriptions for me。 While they were well written， having detailed descriptions for all guns， clothing， food and drinks， etc just felt like too much and made the plot drag at times。Overall this is a suspenseful and action packed plot that makes for an entertaining read。 I split time between the audiobook and ebook and thought the narrator did a great job and would recommend either format。 Thanks to @putnambooks @prhaudio for the DRC & ALC！ 。。。more

I’ve enjoyed all the books I’ve read by this author， though I know I haven’t read all of them。 I was excited to realize this features the adult daughter of a long-running protagonist。 （And having realized this is the second novel featuring her， I’ve already ordered the earlier book which introduces her）。 And I hope this move introduces a new generation of readers to this author。 Either way， I applaud this development。The book was great！ I read it in two sittings and was completely absorbed。 I re I’ve enjoyed all the books I’ve read by this author， though I know I haven’t read all of them。 I was excited to realize this features the adult daughter of a long-running protagonist。 （And having realized this is the second novel featuring her， I’ve already ordered the earlier book which introduces her）。 And I hope this move introduces a new generation of readers to this author。 Either way， I applaud this development。The book was great！ I read it in two sittings and was completely absorbed。 I really enjoyed how Letty Davenport’s backstory is introduced through dialogue necessary to the plot setup （rather than in an “info dump” in exposition）， and continued to be revealed in bits and pieces as the story rolls along。 Also delicately handled is Letty’s mentoring from another， more seasoned female professional in her field， organically in scenes where it became relevant。 The tone and setting were different from the Minnesota-set books to which I’m accustomed from John Sanford， but equally well done。 I don’t want to reveal any plot details， and I assume you’ve read the provided blurb before moving on to check our reviews。 The plot was layered， the investigation unceasing， the development fast and well structured。 Highly recommend！ 。。。more

I was so excited to receive an advanced copy of this book， thank you John Sandford， NetGalley and Penguin-Putnam。 I’ve read every single John Sandford book and I love the Letty Davenport series， looking forward to more。 This was a quick， efficient read。 Great character development with Letty， Baxter and the club of women shooters。

Davenport’s adopted daughter Letty is grown up and now and this second book of the series about her has Letty working to infiltrate a group of hackers planning to commit terrorist acts。 With her partner from the NSA， the women head for California to get to the bottom of the problem。 As they learn more information， and the bodies pile up， the two begin to think there are multiple parties involved， not just the hacker group， Ordinary People that they have been instructed to infiltrate and sabotage Davenport’s adopted daughter Letty is grown up and now and this second book of the series about her has Letty working to infiltrate a group of hackers planning to commit terrorist acts。 With her partner from the NSA， the women head for California to get to the bottom of the problem。 As they learn more information， and the bodies pile up， the two begin to think there are multiple parties involved， not just the hacker group， Ordinary People that they have been instructed to infiltrate and sabotage。 Though the story is centered on computer hacking， it is not full of technical terminology so it’s not necessary to have a computer science background to read the book。 I would recommend this book to readers of Sanford’s other books and those who enjoy thrillers。 Though it is the second in a series， it can be read as a standalone but most people would prefer reading The Investigator， the predecessor to this book。 。。。more

I liked Letty a bit more in this one than I did in the first book， but she has a long way to grow before she's anywhere near as good as her father， Lucus Davenport， who has been a favorite of mine for years。 The National Security Agency （NSA） brings her in for an undercover operation to track down a well-organized cell of hackers known as "Ordinary People"。 The NSA tells her the hackers are nosing around natural gas distribution systems and they think the group intends to shut down the natural g I liked Letty a bit more in this one than I did in the first book， but she has a long way to grow before she's anywhere near as good as her father， Lucus Davenport， who has been a favorite of mine for years。 The National Security Agency （NSA） brings her in for an undercover operation to track down a well-organized cell of hackers known as "Ordinary People"。 The NSA tells her the hackers are nosing around natural gas distribution systems and they think the group intends to shut down the natural gas supply of a northern city in a ransomware attack which could， in the dead of winter， cause civilian fatalities。 The NSA wants Letty to hook up with one of their computer specialists and to protect him as he tries to infiltrate the hacker cell to identify as many of them as possible so the agency can avert the attack。 Letty still works as an investigator for the inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security， although her real boss is Senator Christopher Colles， chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee。 While Letty suspects the NSA reps aren’t telling her the entire story， she accepts the assignment when Colles asks her to take it。 They soon learn that there is much more about the operation than the NSA told her and Baxter when they signed on。 It isn’t long before they discover the NSA has pitted them against a far more dangerous adversary than a bunch of computer nerds， and their actual mission has nothing to do with keeping someone from shutting off natural gas supplies。 Letty is a strong female lead character for this series， and she is so much like her father even if she was adopted。 John Sandford's "Prey" series will always be my favorite because of the Lucas Davenport character and Lucas's friends and fellow agents， but I think this series will eventually be equally s good。 I really didn't like anything about the first book in the series， mainly because of Letty's "better than anyone else" attitude and it read as if aliens had taken over John Sandford's body to write it， but I did more enjoy this one。 。。。more

When Lettie Davenport， the adopted daughter of U。S。 Marshal Lucas Davenport and his surgeon wife， Weather， used to make an occasional appearance in one of Lucas's books， I never warmed up to her much。 Then when she got her own series with last year's The Investigator， I started to take her a bit more seriously。 With this， her second book， I started to like her a lot。 Seriously。At this point in her life - she's 25 - she's an investigator for Homeland Security， at least on the surface; under it， s When Lettie Davenport， the adopted daughter of U。S。 Marshal Lucas Davenport and his surgeon wife， Weather， used to make an occasional appearance in one of Lucas's books， I never warmed up to her much。 Then when she got her own series with last year's The Investigator， I started to take her a bit more seriously。 With this， her second book， I started to like her a lot。 Seriously。At this point in her life - she's 25 - she's an investigator for Homeland Security， at least on the surface; under it， she works for a powerful U。S。 Senator。 Through him， she's asked to go under cover to try to infiltrate a ransomware hacking group known as Ordinary People， ostensibly to prevent another attack; in the process， she meets another hotshot investigator and crack sharpshooter， Barbara Cartwright， and they hit it off。 Their camaraderie leads to both friendship and， when Lettie needs more help on her assignment， a professional assist （just for the record， I liked her too）。 Lettie also picks up an undercover "partner" named Rod Baxter - another very likable dude （the repartee between the two can get quite amusing）。It doesn't take too long， though， for Letty and Rod to figure out there's more to their assignment than they were led to believe - and the difference between the assumed adversaries and the real ones can become a matter of life and death with the slightest of missteps。 All in all， it's another fast-paced book with an intriguing， timely plot that kept me entertained throughout。 Many thanks to the publisher， via NetGalley， for allowing me to read and review a pre-release copy。 Don't miss this one！ 。。。more

compared to The Investigator which I felt had high points and low points。 I still don't know whether I prefer a book to be solidly enjoyable or have euphoric highs and relative lows， but either way make for welcome additions， though many of them seem to be variations on previous characters that Sanford has written。 I appreciate that though because there have been quite a few characters who I don't think were in enough of his books， so these kindred spirits do well in continuing their roles。 The new additions include multiple powerful women who were interesting to read about。 There are a few brief viewpoints aside from Letty's， which I'm quite pleased were included， as I think having other perspectives can often enhance a narrative。 A few of the characters have sexual encounters， mostly in passing to where I don't know if they would be called scenes， as maybe one is described in any significant detail。 Sexuality is present in his other books and I'm glad to see that having the protagonist and other major characters be women hasn't lead to its exclusion。This book is about cybercrime and overall I'm happy with the technical aspects presented and the relative sophistication of its depiction。 There's a particular focus on hacking and cryptocurrency。 Even recent developments such as El Salvador's acceptance of Bitcoin as legal tender and the role that plays in money laundering of ransomware attacks is discussed。 I don't know whether the primary tech guy is meant to be comedic relief， but that's what I see him as， which is maybe to balance out his tech talk for readers uninterested in such matters。 There's action as well， including gun fights， and more than a few people are killed， so it's not at all only about nefarious plans involving technology。 As with her father Lucas Davenport， Letty is more concerned with results than strictly following the law， though not quite to the same degree of deviation。In previous Sandford books I've had issues with the internal consistency of its vague chronology， which may be my most common complaint overall for books。 Fortunately， that isn't a problem here at all。 I think this may be the only Sanford book that's precise about when events occur and the duration of time between them。 At some times it's known literally to the day of when various events take place。 It's not that I want that in books， but if it's going to done， it ought to be done well。 There's a good reason for that， because I believe this is also the first Sandford book where the characters are involved in currently ongoing major geopolitical events。 I found myself being pleasantly surprised， and certainly intrigued， by where the story eventually goes。 Letty skipped the small time crimes and went straight into events of international importance。 She and her crew are highly competent and I don't see anything wrong with that。What I appreciate the most about this series in comparison to the Prey and Flowers series， which are both enjoyable in their own ways， is how much agency the characters have and how integral they are to the events of the story。 Nothing that happens would've happened without Letty being involved。 I feel this series has a more grounded sense of realism by comparison， which may not be what some want and feel it's somewhat more boring that way， but I also like this sort of narrative as well。 The relatively few Sandford books that I didn't really like were often because it seemed the character would bumble around for a while and then the case would resolve itself， to where it doesn't seem to matter if the character is involved。 That isn't the case here as the characters are highly competent with clear objectives and goals。 They know what， when， and how they want to approach their problems。I'm very much enjoying this new series and I look forward to the next book， probably more than the Prey series at this point for me personally， as I think Sandford is putting more effort and passion into these since they're a rather different pace and kind of story。 Which is not to say I'm not looking forward to his other works， because I am。 This series is refreshing and I hope Sandford continues it for as long as is reasonably possible。 I have confidence that whatever Letty's next adventure is， it'll be entirely worthwhile。I received this advance reading/review copy （ARC） from
